What Is Spray Tan?

A spray tan is applied by a technician spraying a fine mist onto your body. This mist contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which interacts with your skin to tan it naturally. DHA has been approved for external use by the FDA since the 1970s.

The temporary tan generally lasts 3-7 days, depending on how you care for it.

Is It Safe?

Choosing to spray tan is considered completely safe for your skin, especially compared to sun tanning or tanning beds.

Spray tan will not provide protection against the sun’s rays, so be sure to use sun block when outside still, even though your skin looks tan.

The FDA has approved DHA, the active ingredient of spray tan, for more than 40 years. DHA is completely safe for external use, but it is recommended to minimize inhalation and minimize exposure to your mucous membranes (eyes, nose, lips, genitals.)

How To Prepare For Your Spray Tanning Session

When preparing for your spray tan session, be sure to do the following:

  • Shave or wax 1-2 days before your appointment (to give the spray the best access to your skin)
  • Exfoliate your skin 1 day before your appointment (so the spray is applied to skin which will be there for awhile)
  • Remove makeup, deodorant and other products from your skin immediately before your appointment (to help the spray bind to your skin)
  • Keep the spray tan solution on overnight (no showering, soap or moisturizer for at least 8 hours to help it bind better)
